More Learning
One of the biggest advantages of a small class is time. With an average of 10 students in each class, Chatmore teachers spend more time teaching, giving feedback and checking for understanding. Students have more opportunities to do the same! Research shows that students achieved stronger academic outcomes as a result of smaller classes, particularly in the early years.
Every Voice Heard
Children learn by thinking aloud, asking questions and sharing their ideas. In smaller learning communities, every student has more opportunities to collaborate, contribute and participate in meaningful discussion. This builds confidence alongside understanding, a valuable skill for our secondary learners.
Stronger Relationships
Children are more likely to engage in learning when they feel known by the adults around them. Small schools naturally create more opportunities for teachers to understand each child's strengths, interests and learning needs. Research shows that positive teacher-student relationships are associated with improved engagement, motivation and academic outcomes.
Capacity for Calm
Smaller classes often provide quieter, more predictable environments where teachers can establish routines, minimise distractions and help students stay on task. Better behaviour emerges as does more cognitive space for learning. There's certainly a time for peacefulness, but we are not always quiet. We welcome joy, laughter, energetic discussion and team spirit, always!
Teaching that Responds
Research shows that learning improves when feedback is timely and specific. Smaller classes allow teachers to notice misconceptions sooner, adjust instruction in the moment and provide more individual guidance throughout the lesson. Instead of waiting until work is marked, students receive feedback while the learning is happening. This is one of the most effective influences on student achievement.
Purposefully Personalised
Great teachers constantly adapt learning to fit the needs of the class. Smaller classes make it easier to identify misconceptions and offer support to learners who find a concept difficult or need a different strategy. Responsive teaching becomes part of everyday practice rather than an occasional intervention.
